IV fluids, check the potassium, begin the insulin infusion. These are mainstays in the treatment arm for patients with DKA. Unfortunately, a lot of hospitals require patients on an insulin infusion to be admitted to the ICU. With more critically ill patients, this adds to the burden in a lot of ED's as ICU beds are at a premium. Is there an alternative way? SQUID protocol is a new treatment algorithm that does not require an insulin infusion in certain DKA patients and can be accomplished on most med-surg floors. The speaker will discuss the literature and how to implement this protocol in the emergency department.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the literature behind the SQUID protocol
Discuss how to implement the SQUID protocol in the emergency department.
