Are we missing warning signs for child abuse in our emergency departments? Many children will have a sentinel injury prior to having a fatal or near fatal injury related to abuse. Unfortunately abuse may be more common than we think. We must maintain a high index of suspicion to try and identify these events before it is too late! This talk will go over red flag signs where child abuse must be considered.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the significance of sentinel injuries.
  • Recognize which physical exam findings should raise concern
  • Perform next steps in evaluation where there is concern for abuse.
