This session will provide attendees with a brief review of the prevalence and morbidity associated with untreated alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the ED. Effective interventions for treatment are available but infrequently implemented in the ED setting. I will discuss the ease of initiating treatment in the ED with a range of interventions as well as the positive outcomes for your patients. In this session, I will discuss both FDA approved medications and off -label evidence- based treatments that can be offered for AUD as well as other supports to support long-term recovery.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the importance of their role as an emergency physician in managing alcohol use disorder (AUD)
List effective medications for treating AUD, the indications and contraindications for each.
Effectively advise their patients on how to access continued treatment for their AUD after they are discharged
