Maybe the condom broke. Or they didn't use one. Whatever the case, your male patient had unprotected sex last night. And now they're in your ED, asking for the "morning-after pill." It's not for their partner-- it's for them.
Over the past several years, bacterial STI rates, particularly syphilis, have skyrocketed. At the same time, treatment options for STIs are decreasing, due to increased antibiotic resistance. So what other options are out there?
This session will cover the new recommendations for doxy-PEP, including the 2024 CDC Clinical Guidelines for bacterial STI post-exposure prophylaxis. We will discuss the clinical evidence behind this recommendation, including past and current trials. Finally, this session will conclude with a brief exploration of the future of doxy-PEP in other populations.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, the learner will be able to identify the target population for doxy-PEP.
After this session, the learner will be able to prescribe doxy-PEP and refer the patient to appropriate follow-up care.
After this session, the learner will be able to discuss the limitations of bacterial STI prophylaxis.
