Hand injuries are one of those complaints that emergency docs are often not thrilled to pick up. The outcomes can be awful for patients with life-long consequences, the literature is sometimes vague on best practices, and hand specialty backup can be just a dream in many settings. This talk will walk you through a simple method to not miss subtle but consequential injuries, what the consultant will want to know when you call, what we should do in the ED and what should be referred to the hand surgeon, who needs antibiotics and who can be treated and sent home. Be armed with the right information when you pick up that next hand injury chart.
Learning Objectives:
Describe a simple yet complete exam of the hand to not miss those small but consequential injuries
Describe what we should do in the ED for hand injures, vs who can follow up in a few days vs which patients need to see a hand specialist now
Describe best discharge plan for patients with hand injuries including splinting and antibiotics
