Most emergency physicians learned in medical school and residency to determine the Rh status of 1st trimester pregnant women with vaginal bleeding and to administer Rhogam (Rh immune globulin) to Rh negative women. This session will discuss how this strategy is not based on scientific evidence and why emergency physicians still doing this should change their practice.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, the learner will be able to describe the scientific rationale for why immunize sensitization does not happen in 1st trimester women with vaginal bleeding.
After this session, the learner will be able to explain why emergency physicians should not administer Rh immune globulin to first trimester patients in the ED.
