A small infant is brought in to your ED one night, working hard to breathe and with cyanosis. As you hasten to gather resuscitation equipment you wonder if you should ask for prostaglandin E1. This session will explain the key features of common congenital heart defects and demystify their diagnosis in the ED. The lecture will focus on key resuscitation dos and don’ts in these smallest patients, with a particular focus on giving prostaglandin E1.
Learning Objectives:
List features diagnostic of congenital heart defects seen in the ED
Describe the diagnostic tools for congenital heart defects available for use in the ED and interpret their results
Perform appropriate resuscitation of infants with cyanotic heart lesions and determine when to treat with prostaglandin E1
