This talk will look at the growing field of geriatric trauma care and specifically look at the concept of frailty as it relates to resuscitation, prognostication, and goal decisions in geriatric trauma. Our population is aging and more active than ever. Age is just a number and trauma practitioners, including emergency providers, need to be aware of the concept of frailty and how it impacts the care they deliver. Utilizing the most recent literature, including he American College of Surgeons position paper on geriatric trauma, the talk will advance the participants knowledge of frailty and how to provide top quality geriatric trauma care.
Learning Objectives:
After the session, the learner will be able to explain what frailty is, how it impacts trauma care and how to utilize the concept in their everyday emergency practice.
The learner will be able to identify resources to measure frailty in their patients including validated scoring systems.
The learner will have an understanding of the growing field of geriatric trauma and the leading causes of death from geriatric trauma. It isn't just falls any more!
