Barriers to primary healthcare access have compelled emergency medicine physicians to assume a more substantial role in assessing and managing non-emergent conditions including asymptomatic hypertension and type 2 diabetes. As a dual resident in Emergency and Internal Medicine, I aim to empower emergency physicians to initiate outpatient therapy for these conditions when appropriate. This presentation focuses on safely starting first-line medications for these conditions in the Emergency Department, with guidance on patient counseling and addressing potential challenges for those without close outpatient follow-up.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, the learner will be able to identify patients for whom discharge prescriptions for hypertension and type 2 diabetes are appropriate to initiate from the ED.
After this session, the learner will be able to select the best antihypertenisve agent and oral hypoglycemic agent to prescribe at the time of ED discharge.
After this session, the learner will be able to counsel patients on the initiation of the above medications.
