As an emergency medicine physician, Andrew E. Muck, MD, MBA, is experienced in providing exceptional patient care, educating the next generation of doctors, and contributing to advancements in his specialty at the local, regional, and global levels. Muck is chair of the UVA School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine.
Before joining UVA Health in June 2023, Muck was a professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and held a faculty appointment in the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at the University of Texas Health San Antonio. At UT Health San Antonio, Muck helped launch the city’s first civilian emergency medicine residency. He also developed global health programs for residents, serving in various leadership roles, including program director and vice chair of education.
Muck served as the regional medical director at Victoria Emergency Associates (VEA) during the COVID-19 epidemic. He was responsible for provider management of 8 emergency departments for CHRISTUS Health’s Santa Rosa Hospital System. During his tenure with VEA, Muck led dramatic improvements in patient satisfaction and safety. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Muck served as an emergency medicine physician with deployments to Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom.
Muck has led numerous clinical, educational, and humanitarian efforts. He was the founding medical director of the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic, which provides free health care for refugees placed in San Antonio. Muck has served as a consultant with the World Health Organization (WHO), where he has been involved with basic emergency care training in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Chisinau, Moldova. He also developed the WHO’s Community First Aid Response Course, which is being launched in resource-limited areas.
