Rebecca G. Theophanous, MD, MHSc is an Emergency Medicine physician at Duke University Hospital and the Emergency Ultrasound Director at the Durham VA Healthcare System. She is actively involved with clinical ultrasound education, teaching residents and students on shift, performing weekly ultrasound image review, presenting monthly advanced ultrasound talks, and teaching at monthly resident simulation sessions. Her research work was supported by an SAEMF-AEUS grant, identifying facilitators and barriers to implementation of a new emergency ultrasound program at the Durham VAHCS and its impact on clinical care for future dissemination. She is also studying 3DUS technology at Duke as an innovative bedside tool and training ED providers on ultrasound. Her academic interests include medical education, with a focus on ultrasound and critical care.
In addition to clinical ultrasound education, Dr. Theophanous has presented her ultrasound research at multiple local and national emergency medicine conferences, including presenting a fellow lightning talk on her 3DUS work at the annual Society for Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships conference in 2019 and an oral abstract presentation at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine conference in May 2023. She was a speaker on POCUS use in cardiac arrest and critical care panel at the Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Conference in September 2023. Furthermore, she is a reviewer including for the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine and has worked on writing point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) guidelines and policies as part of her hospital’s POCUS taskforce. Her academic interests include medical education, with a focus on ultrasound and critical care.
